SOVEREIGN BUTTER:THE GOLDEN BAY DAIRY FACTORY COMPANY LIMITED has a wonderful record of achievement to celebrate upon the occasion of its Seventy-Fifth Anniversary.
For many years the main industry in Takaka was the harvest of the fine stands of native forest. Timber milling required many hands and this brought settlers into the district. As the timber trade declined farms were developed, but farming was usually a matter of hard work even for the families merely to eke out an existence. It was the development of the dairy industry that brought stability into the local farming scene and something of this development is recorded here. To give foundation to the story the writer has given some background concerning the origins of the dairy industry in New Zealand.
