WILD ORCHIDS OF THE LOWER NORTH ISLAND

Author(s): DE LANG, ROLF, ST GEORGE, SAWYER

Orchids | Orchid & Other

This field guide will help you to identify the 72 indigenous orchids reported from the lower North Island. In addition to providing aids to recognise these orchids, the guide also provides botanical, biogeographical and ecological information about each of the region's orchid species. This includes distribution maps, photographs and details of their immediate conservation needs. In this way we hope to raise awareness of New Zealand's indigenous orchids and promote the region's remarkably diverse orchid flora.

The lower North Island is defined here as the area encompassing the Department of Conservation's Wellington Conservancy (excluding the Chatham Islands) plus additional land south of the Manawatu River. It includes Kapiti, Mana and Matiu/Somes Islands as well as the Tararua, Rimutaka and Aorangi ranges.
