Sustainable Agriculture

Author(s): T. Byrne (Standing Committee on Agriculture, Australia)

Farming & Animals

This report discusses the concept of sustainable agriculture, identifies a range of current practices and farming systems which promote sustainability and suggests some important requirements for a more widespread adoption of such farming practices. The report then surveys the main resource management issues and problems in Australian agriculture and also examines these regionally on the basis of a provisional agro-ecological map developed for the purpose. Finally the report puts forward a set of recommendations broadly covering communication, whole farm planning, education and extension, research, resource pricing and taxing and better co-ordination of natural resource management. While the report concentrates particularly on the role of governments in promoting sustainability, a strong theme is the need to recognize the importance of sustainability to the farm business itself and the key role to be played by effective farm planning and management in achieving more sustainable agriculture.
