Country Stations & History

BETWEEN TWO RIVERS by Les Wright. West Coast gold rush history is full of towns that appeared almost instantly on sea beaches, by rivers and lakes or in dense forest. There, diggers in their hundreds, or even thousands, would gather for whatever entertainment or pleasure took their fancy, generally ensuring that their own quick-won wealth passed on to others just as rapidly. There are also many tales of towns in slow decline as the gold gave out and numbers of diggers dwindled. An exception to both rules is Camerons, a township south of Greymouth scattered between two rivers. The event that gave rise to it was not so much a gold rush as a gathering of a few gold seekers around the claim of an obscure prospector. Most importantly it did not fade. Camerons has remained and developed far beyond its beginnings in saplings, canvas and odd sheets of corrugated iron.
