Pastoral farming has provided the base for NZ growth & development since the second half of the 19th Century. Stock & station firms contributed to the high rate of growth achieved. They provided marketing services for wool livestock & other farm produce distributed supplies & most importantly provided their farmer clients with advice support & often the risk finance for expansion.
Stock & station business has always been a personal one involving a close relationship & trust between farmer client & firm. It has been distinguished by men of character integrity enthusiasm and enterprise . One such person was a young Scot John Roberts who founded Murray Roberts & Co Ltd. For nearly one hundred years the company played its part in pastoral development of NZ & in the handling & marketing of its wool.
