Decorating with Flowers

The art of flower arranging has a long and noble history.

But the use of flowers as decoration goes much wider and can be traced to earliest times.

Often, like their counterparts in nature, flowers used in decoration appear in the most unexpected places.

Among the many examples of floral decoration in this book are jewellery in gold and precious stones, the wallpaper of William Morris, an American quilt made from carefully preserved pieces of chintz, the magnificent tiles of the Topkapi Palace, Art Nouveau glass, English knot gardens, Persian carpets, lace, flower prints, and many, many more.

In each case, the floral decoration has been used in a quite distinctive way.

Designers throughout the world continue to find inspiration in flowers, wild and cultivated.

In use the flowers are revealed in their many varied aspects, and a great tradition lives on.
