Mosaic art is perhaps the ultimate in recycling, where you can turn 'scraps' and 'junk' into rich and beautiful works of art. Mosaics shows readers how to look for and adapt ideas and designs from the world around them through paper, ornaments, photographs, fabric, paintings, jewellery, glass, tiles, pebbles, polymer clay and found objects to create fabulous mosaics. The enthusiasm for their craft comes through in every word, as Liz and Joy take you through the design stage and gathering materials to step-by-step instructions using the latest techniques, including the revolutionary glass and tile saw, which brings the 'curve' to mosaics. And there are also lots of tips to guide the novice through the technical aspects of gluing and grouting. After reading this book you will be itching to get started, and will be able to produce beautiful and lasting artworks.
Elizabeth Atkins-Hood developed her considerable skills in mosaic and decoupage during her 13 years in the United States, mostly in the mountains of Big Bear, California. But it was her introduction to a unique glass and tile saw developed by friend Jesse Cogswell that allowed her and fellow author Joy Bell to take mosaics to a whole new level. Joy Bell worked as a commercial artist and gallery owner for some time. She then owned an antique store, which provided the source materials for many of her wonderful creations. Although both authors are based just north of Auckland, New Zealand, Liz and Joy attend the Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) convention every year to revel in the company of similarly obsessed mosaic artists.
