The word 'lily' is a common reference to many plants called under this genera but are only, at the best, distantly related and sometimes not related at all. In fact, there are over 300 plants called 'a lily' but are not true lilies at all, but the lilies referred to in this book belong to the genus 'Lilium'. This is botanically classified as one of the outstanding genus, in a very large family of liliaceae. There are 2000 species, arranged in some 200 genera, but these are found in the northern, tropical and temperate regions of the world. The true lily as described in this bok is not found in the Southern Hemisphere but in the regions mentioned. Lilies are distributed in many countries of the Northern Hemisphere, the Himalayas, Japan, Taiwan, China, North America and Europe.
