Special Offers: Second Hand Books by Beverley Nichols

Beverley Nichols 1898 - 1983

Beverley Nichols was educated at Marlborough and Oxford. His first novel, the very rare and collectible “Prelude”, was written while he was still an undergraduate, and was an immediate success. He created a literary sensation by writing his autobiography, “Twenty-Five”, at that early age.

In 1972 he made his name as an interviewer with “Are They The Same At Home?” – a series of portraits of the famous. This was followed by “The Star Spangled Manner”, a first book of American impressions published in 1928, which earned him the title of ‘the world’s champion questioner’.
Witty, urbane, intelligent - Beverley Nichols has a delightful way of recording times in his life with people he loves and hates. He is very shrewd in his depictions of personalities, trends, and the styles that folk adopt as time goes on – something I am sure has come back to bite him manyfold. He has a unique American viewpoint of the British of the day, often with a startling accuracy that could shock some readers. He was reported to say that American newspapers gave Britain about as much space, on the average, as British papers devoted to the Isle of Man.
Altogether he has written some twenty-seven books, covering a wide range of subjects. Many of his gardening titles are still available NEW:
  • GARDEN OPEN TODAY, hardback, $65.00
  • GARDEN OPEN TOMORROW, hardback, $50.00
  • A THATCHED ROOF, hardback, $60.00
  • SUNLIGHT ON THE LAWN, hardback, $60.00
  • MERRY HALL, hardback, $45.00
  • DOWN THE GARDEN PATH, hardback, $60.00
Nichols also loved cats and he wrote “CATS A.B.C.” (paperback, $30.00) where you can meet "Four," "Five," and Oscar. "Four" was a champion purrer. "Five" invented the sport of beeing, surprising innocent bees with a bash worthy of a tennis pro. And "Oscar" who, adopted later in life after an "excessively Bohemian" upbringing, had a penchant for scratching the primrose yellow silk on the divan. The three shared a home and garden with Beverley Nichols, who understood them superbly and rather doted on them.
